International Day of Play – Let's play with the children

The 11th of June is World Play Day. It's a great day to get outside and play, so please ask the children to be mindful. We therefore encourage you, parents, to make time on this day to play with your children.

The day was held for the first time in 2024 and is intended to raise awareness of children's right to play and the important role that play plays in the mental and physical development and well-being of children.

The theme of International Play Day this year is: „Protect play, protect childhood.“ The theme is a reminder for all of us, governments, businesses, schools and families – that a happy and healthy childhood is built on play.

Play is a great way to strengthen the bond between parents and children; it is likely to build trust and support children's well-being.

Article 31 of the Convention on the Rights of the Child states that:

  • States Parties recognise the right of the child to rest and leisure, to engage in play and recreational activities appropriate to their age, and to a free participation in cultural life and the arts.
  • States Parties shall respect and promote the right of the child to take full part in cultural and artistic life, and shall encourage the provision of appropriate and equal opportunities for the pursuit of cultural, artistic and recreational activities.

Let's have a fun day and make space to play with the children ❤️ Yes, the Municipality of Hafnarfjörður encourages parents to have a fun day, make space and play with their children.
