The nursery school
Hjalli opened on 25 September 1989 under the direction of Margrét Pála Ólafsdóttir. Today, the nursery celebrated its 30th anniversary with pupils, staff, the mayor, the founder herself, and other guests. Over the years, Hjalli Nursery School has established itself as a nursery that takes unconventional paths in many respects, with the primary focus on ensuring the children are happy and that equality is at the core of its approach.

The Hjalli nursery school immediately took unconventional approaches to its work, which was widely discussed both at home and abroad. Hjalli is, for example, known for taking unconventional approaches to its choice of
materials or play materials for the children that encourage creativity and imagination. Also for a special emphasis on equal opportunities for girls and boys to play and learn, and for having divided the pupils into
groups for girls and boys. This ensures both sexes have a certain space for play within a peer group. Today, the school operates fourteen nurseries across the country in ten local authorities. The Hjalli concept also runs three primary schools in three municipalities for children aged 5–10, one of which is in Hafnarfjörður. The Hjalli concept employs around 450 people and has approximately 1,800 pupils.

A unique environment – a stone's throw from natural wonders

The location of the Hjalli nursery school in Hafnarfjörður is unique. Hjalli is situated by Víðistaðatún, one of the largest recreational areas for the people of Hafnarfjörður, offering a wide variety of opportunities for play and outdoor activities. The lava fields and the seafront are also a short distance away, not to mention Hellisgerði, which is within walking distance of the school. Outdoor activities and physical exercise are a major part of the nursery's work, and the location therefore offers a wealth of opportunities.

Hafnarfjörður Municipality warmly congratulates the Hjalli nursery school on its 30th anniversary!
