Hafnarfjörður keeps tariff increases within 2.51%

The City of Hafnarfjörður will not increase general tariffs by more than 2.51% in 2027. The city is therefore abandoning the change to the sibling discount at its nurseries.

Keeping pace with general price increases

The Municipality of Hafnarfjörður will not increase general fee schedules by more than 2.5% in 2027. The town council decided at its meeting yesterday morning that this would be a fundamental benchmark for the town's current budget preparation. The town is thereby responding to a call from the Association of Icelandic Municipalities and trade unions for a joint effort against inflation.

In light of this, the town council has just decided to abandon the change to the sibling discount at Hafnarfjörður's nurseries, which was approved by the town council on 17 September and was due to come into effect on 1 November. That decision would, after all, have resulted in the increase in nursery fees exceeding those limits in certain cases.

„With this decision, the City of Hafnarfjörður wishes to contribute to curbing fee increases that affect household expenditure. The aim is to promote greater stability in the economy and create harmony in the community,“ says Orri Björnsson, chairman of the town council. „We therefore need to be both resourceful and thrifty while continuing to provide residents with a good service.“

The National Assembly of the Association of Icelandic Municipalities adopted a resolution on 25 September to keep increases in general price lists within 2.5% next year. The aim is to support the reduction of inflation and interest rates and to create the conditions for collective agreements to hold.

The resolution also calls for the government and its agencies to participate in the initiative by similarly limiting increases to fees and charges that have a direct impact on households. The City of Hafnarfjörður intends to answer that call.
