Over 400 pumpkins were given a new look by imaginative carvers in Hellisgerði at the weekend. „A brilliant weekend,“ says Knútur Hreiðarsson, owner of Helliskaffi in this gorgeous art garden of ours in Hafnarfjörður.
Halloween is coming up!
It was a hive of activity at Hellisgerði over the weekend. Families came together and let their creativity run wild carving pumpkins. In total, over 400 pumpkins were given a new look by imaginative carving enthusiasts.
Knútur Hreiðarsson, owner of Helliskaffi in Hellisgerði, says the pumpkin carving is here to stay. „A brilliant weekend,“ he says. „The first and certainly not the last.“ Everything is now clean and tidy, as if nothing had happened – apart from the pumpkins that were left in the sculpture garden, which are now illuminated with fairy lights. Well worth seeing!
A pumpkin carving competition was held, and the judging panel is now reviewing the most impressive pumpkins. The winners will be announced on Halloween itself, 31st October.
„People are still sending us pictures of their pumpkins, which they carved here in the garden, and we're giving them time to do so. Our regular visitor Sigurjón, who is an artist living here in Hafnarfjörður and works on pop-up picture books for children, is also on the judging panel. He helped us an awful lot, gave us a real boost and helped with the set-up for the weekend,“ says Knútur.
The garden also had a fantastic makeover for the event. „We also got a lot of help from Daniel Erlendsson, who lent us a lot of decorations. He has worked with the Forestry Service on a Halloween event there and lent them to us for the photos,“ explains Knútur.
The game will be repeated next year, as many have created fun traditions around Halloween here in Hafnarfjörður. Knútur encourages everyone to pop into Hellisgerði and enjoy the pumpkins, which will be left up for as long as the weather allows. „The overnight frost helps,“ he says, laughing.
Yes, there was a great atmosphere in Hellisgerði where young and old alike enjoyed creating together and getting into the Halloween spirit.
It was a real pumpkin feast and a fun build-up to the upcoming Halloween!
