The Althingi first passed laws on housewives' leave in 1960, and the current legislation dates from 1972. The laws were enacted in the spirit of the time and are based on the society of that era.

A bill to repeal the Law on Housewives' Annual Leave, No. 53/1972 was presented to the 138th Parliament in 2009 ? 2010, as well as the Equality Authority having responded to an enquiry from the Vestmannaeyjar municipality in 2007, stating that it considered it likely that the Maternity Leave Act constituted a breach of the Act on the Equal Status and Equal Rights of Women and Men. It is also pointed out that the 1972 Act is based on a rise in a price index that no longer exists, and the calculated contribution by local authorities according to it is unrealistic. The social impact that housewives' holidays have had on the women who have taken them cannot be underestimated. If the law is repealed, the holiday committees can continue to organise trips if they so choose. The involvement of the municipalities would be voluntary and, most importantly, residents would not be discriminated against on the basis of sex. Today, every means must be sought to economise and prioritise funds. In light of the above, the Hafnarfjörður Town Council agrees to grant the housing holiday committee a group subsidy on this occasion, based on the number of participants per trip. Furthermore, the Association of Icelandic Municipalities will be contacted to take the lead in reviewing the legislation. The Town Council agrees to grant the Senior Citizens' Travel Committee a comparable group grant, based on information regarding the number of participants.
