Thorður Þórarinsson
Thórður Þórarinsson took up the post of Mayor of Hafnarfjörður in May 2026, following his appointment by the town council at the start of a new term of office.
Thórður is a political scientist by training and has extensive experience in public administration, policy-making and management. Before taking up the post of mayor, he served as the Executive Director of the Independence Party from 2014 to 2025. During that time, he managed the party's operations through four general elections, three local elections and four national conventions.
Prior to this, Þórður worked for nine years as the Executive Director of the Nordic Council of Ministers for the West Nordic Countries, a cooperation forum for the parliaments of Iceland, Greenland and the Faroe Islands which works to strengthen cooperation in the West Nordic region. He has also held numerous positions of trust and leadership in political and youth work. Thórður's career is characterised by a strong vision, extensive management experience and a deep knowledge of public administration. He has placed a strong emphasis on cooperation, professionalism and service to the community, both at a national and international level.
Thórður was born in 1967. He is married to Marta María Ástbjörnsdóttir, a psychologist, and they have three sons.
