Farmer's Day

Happy Þorramánuður! – We are hosting a farmers' day coffee on the 2nd floor between 13:00 and 15:00. Coffee, doughnuts, and refreshments with a poetry reading in the old style…
As it says in the Sagas of Jón Árnason, a farmer should welcome the month of Thorr with the following words:
… because they were to be the first to get up of all the people in the village that morning when the winter solstice arrived. They were to go down wearing only their shirt, be both bare-chested and barefoot, but put one trouser leg on and let the other hang down, dragging it behind them on one foot, then walk to the door, open the farm gate, hop on one foot around the farm, dragging their trousers behind them, and welcome Thorri to the yard or into the house. Afterwards, they were to hold a feast for the other farmers of the district on the first day of Thorri; this is „to celebrate Thorri“.
In some parts of North Iceland, the first day of Thorrablot is still today called „Bóndadagur“, on which the housewife is meant to treat her farmer well, and the festive occasion is still called „Þorrablót“.
