The Passenger by Ulrich Alexander Boschwitz is the Progress Book of the Month.

The German writer Ulrich Alexander Boschwitz (1915–1942) published only two novels in his short life. The first was published in Swedish in 1937 under a pseudonym, but The Passenger appeared in English in 1939, first in England and then in the United States. A few years later, a French translation of the book was published.

The story was written shortly after Kristallnacht in November 1938 and tells of a Jewish businessman in Berlin, Otto Silbermann, who has fled his home and is trying his best to escape his homeland.

Although The Passenger was written in German, the book was not published in Germany at the time. But after the original manuscript was discovered in 2018, there was no time to lose. The publisher, Peter Graf, reviewed the manuscript and wrote an informative afterword about the work. The book was highly praised in the German media and compared to outstanding works of fiction about the Nazi era, as it is arguably one of the very first works to describe the fate of German Jews.
