Vidistaðaskóli won the senior chess tournament in style
The Hafnarfjörður Primary School Chess Tournament for the oldest pupils in Hafnarfjörður's primary schools was held on Wednesday, 10th May, at Hvaleyrarskóli. The chess tournament was organised by the youth clubs of Hafnarfjörður with the generous support of the Kiwanis Club Hraunborg. A total of 8 primary schools took part in the tournament.
A total of eight primary schools took part in the chess tournament.
The Hafnarfjörður Primary School Chess Tournament for the oldest pupils in Hafnarfjörður's primary schools was held on Wednesday, 10th May, at Hvaleyrarskóli. The chess tournament was organised by the youth clubs of Hafnarfjörður with the generous support of the Kiwanis Club Hraunborg. Grandmaster Helgi Ólafsson ran the tournament alongside Master Áskell Dagur. It is very pleasing to see and experience first-hand the growing interest in chess among the town's children and young people, and it is clear that several of the future's undisputed grandmasters are hiding in the primary schools of Hafnarfjörður. The chess team from Víðistaðaskóli won the tournament in glorious style. Setbergsskóli came second and Hvaleyrarskóli third. A total of 8 primary schools took part in the tournament.
Hraunborg and Haukar want to boost the chess community in Hafnarfjörður.
The Kiwanis Club Hraunborg in Hafnarfjörður organised a chess tournament for the elite chess teams of the 5th to 7th grades of nine primary schools in the town on 22nd March. One of Hraunborg's ambitious goals is to promote and strengthen the chess community in Hafnarfjörður, particularly within the state schools. This is because learning to play chess at a young age according to the established rules has great educational value, increases social skills, sharpens logical thinking and self-discipline, and the understanding that it is important to take responsibility for one's actions and respect time limits, which all pave the way to success, benefit and joy. The Haukar Chess Club also restarted its children's activities for primary school-aged beginners at the beginning of April 2023. The lessons were well-received in April and May, and will resume again in the autumn. They are held at the Haukar Sports Centre in Ásvellir, with an emphasis on openings, endgames and tactics for beginners.
