Hafnarfjörður is among the municipalities that pay staff above-contract wages to attract people to work in the town's nurseries. The City of Hafnarfjörður has been paying additional payments as regular overtime since the beginning of 2022, as part of the municipality's value-adding measures specifically for the staff of its nurseries. The nursery school is the first stage of education, where children are nurtured through creative and encouraging work, and the profession is held in high regard.

Basic pay for staff increased from 1 February 2023

The basic pay for staff at Hafnarfjörður's nurseries has been increased in line with comparable roles within the municipality, and this change came into effect on 1 February 2023. Other measures by the municipality to support the important work carried out in the country's nurseries include support for professional training, a 75% staff discount on nursery fees, priority for staff in nursery admissions, and a reduction in the working week. The total salary for a staff member with a secondary school leaving certificate and one year's work experience is currently (Nov 2023) around 602,000 kr. in the nurseries of the City of Hafnarfjörður.
