The nursery school is the first stage of schooling, where children are nurtured through creative and encouraging work. You can apply for a nursery school place for your child as soon as their National Insurance number is registered. The waiting list is ranked by year and date of birth, so the oldest children are enrolled first. Children in special circumstances may be given priority for a place in the nursery. Priority is also given to the children of staff at Hafnarfjörður's nurseries.

Priority is part of the benefits for nursery staff.

Priority for a nursery place is part of the nursery staff's benefits and the initiative aims to enable new parents and staff to return to work when their maternity leave ends. You apply for a nursery place for your child on the City of Hafnarfjörður's My Pages. Applications must be submitted by 1 March of the year the place is required. A child must be registered as a resident of Hafnarfjörður to be offered a place at a nursery, but they can be placed on the waiting list if they are registered as a resident elsewhere.

In Hafnarfjörður, there are 18 nurseries.

You can apply to more than one nursery in your application, and priority will be applied to all of them. Parents are encouraged to view the available nurseries, contact the relevant headteachers and find out about the work. You can choose a stay time from 4 hours to 8.5 hours a day, but this must be at the same time every weekday.
