Spring clean-up – garden waste bins at all primary schools
From 9th to 12th May 2024, a clean-up period will take place in Hafnarfjörður under the banner 'CLEAN UP HAFNARFJÖRÐUR', during which residents can dispose of garden waste in a container located in every neighbourhood outside each primary school. The containers will be at the schools from the morning of Thursday, 9 May until 5 p.m. on Sunday, 12 May. Residents of Hafnarfjörður are encouraged to take advantage of this service or to bring their bags directly to Sorpa.
Clean-up days in Hafnarfjörður

Residents are encouraged to use recycled packaging or reusable bags when cleaning up. It is noted that garden waste should not be put in bags in the bin, but should instead be emptied directly into it. It is also advisable, where possible, to collect garden waste in a compost heap in a convenient place in the garden and use it for composting. Residents in all areas of Hafnarfjörður are encouraged to take an active part in the clean-up. It is ideal, in the run-up to and during the clean-up days, to get to work in the garden, pruning bushes and flowerbeds.
Duties of landowners
In light of recent events, special attention is drawn to the fact that landowners are required to keep the growth of trees and shrubs on their land within the property boundaries. Tree growth can cause inconvenience and even danger to pedestrians and motorists. Plot owners are also advised that specific regulations apply to the construction of a boundary wall and fence on the plot, which it is important to familiarise themselves with.
