Harvest – growing vegetables and relationships
Would you like to learn how to grow vegetables in a diverse group of people in a friendly environment? Would you like to do something different and exciting this summer? Then this project is for you. Harvest / Growing Roots for you and even the whole family.
Uppskera / Growing Roots is a collaborative project between the GETU organisation and the City of Hafnarfjörður, where families in Hafnarfjörður are invited to take part in community vegetable growing in the family gardens at Víðistaðatún. The aim of the project is to promote sustainability, inclusion, well-being and connection by creating a safe and accessible space where people meet regularly and grow vegetables together.
Families are allocated plots in the family gardens at Víðistaðatún where they help each other with the cultivation under the guidance of a horticulturist and with support from GETU staff and volunteers. Weekly meetings will be held in the gardens where participants can get advice, chat and enjoy each other's company. Events and educational talks will be held at regular intervals.
When selecting participants, special consideration will be given to mixing families from different backgrounds; locals, immigrants and refugees who have been granted international protection in Iceland. Together, the group works to cultivate vegetables, friendship and healthy lifestyles.
The project is funded by the Public Health and Community Fund of HS Orka, but it is also part of the international project. Resilient cities, healthy people which is funded by the European Union.
The application deadline has been extended to the 20th.. May 2025. Interested parties should fill in application here.
