Hafnarfjörður Library honours Svava Jakobsdóttir in the International Year of Women
In celebration of the International Year of Women, the Hafnarfjörður Library is hosting a birthday party in honour of Svava Jakobsdóttir, writer, playwright, Member of Parliament and campaigner, on 4 October at 1 pm.
The programme features a lecture by the literary scholar Sjöfn Asare, who is also part of the Reading Club. She provides an insight into the life and work of Svava, who has left a profound mark on Icelandic literary and cultural history. Following the talk, the actresses María Thelma and Bergdís Júlía, from Spindrift Theatre, will read selected short stories by Svava Jakobsdóttir.
After the event, guests will have the opportunity to view audio material, video recordings and printed material related to Svava and her influential career.
The event is open to all and is part of the library's programme of events for the occasion of the Women's Year 2025.
Hafnarfjörður Library Celebrates Svava Jakobsdóttir on Women's Year
In celebration of the Year of Women, the Hafnarfjörður Municipal Library is hosting a special birthday event in honour of Svava Jakobsdóttir – the acclaimed Icelandic author, playwright, member of parliament, and activist – on 4th October at 13:00.
The programme begins with a talk by literary scholar Sjöfn Asare, known from Lestrarklefinn, who will offer insight into Svava's powerful body of work and her influence on Icelandic literature and society. Following the lecture, actresses María Thelma and Bergdís Júlía from Spindrift Theatre will perform selected readings of Svava's short stories.
After the event, guests are invited to explore a curated selection of audio, video, and printed material related to Svava Jakobsdóttir and her remarkable legacy.
The event is free and open to the public as part of the Library's Women's Year celebrations in 2025.
