Athletes of the Year honoured this evening
The Hafnarfjörður Town Council and the Sports and Leisure Committee today held an awards ceremony for athletes competing for teams from Hafnarfjörður, Awards for Icelandic champions, cup winners, Nordic champions, world champions and special achievements, along with the selection of Hafnarfjörður's Sportswoman, Sportsman and Sports Team of the Year 2017.
The Hafnarfjörður Town Council and the Sports and Leisure Committee today held an awards ceremony for athletes competing for teams from Hafnarfjörður, Awards for Icelandic champions, cup winners, Nordic champions, world champions and special achievements, along with the selection of Hafnarfjörður's Sportswoman, Sportsman and Sports Team of the Year 2017.
Nearly 500 individuals who have won Icelandic championship titles with a Hafnarfjörður team in 2017 are being recognised at the celebration. 18 million was allocated from a fund established by Rio Tinto in Iceland, ÍBH and the City of Hafnarfjörður, which is intended to boost sports activities for under-18s. Awards were presented to cup champions and to those who have won international titles.
The election of Hafnarfjörður's sportswoman, sportsman and sports team took place. Hafnarfjörður's 2017 Team of Excellence is Men's first team handball at Fimleikafélag Hafnarfjarðar. The team reached the four-team final of the cup competition and the final of the Icelandic Championship, where they finished in second place. The team also took part in the European Club Competition, playing three rounds which went well, narrowly missing out on the group stage.
Athlete Arna Stefanía Guðmundsdóttir from Fimleikafélag Hafnarfjarðar is the 2017 Sportswoman of Hafnarfjörður. Arna Stefanía became Icelandic champion this year and cup champion with the women's team at FH. She is a national team athlete in athletics and has taken part in international competitions with good results. Arna Stefanía won the 400m hurdles at the 2017 Small Nations Games. She is the Nordic Women's Indoor Champion in the 400m and won a bronze medal at the European U23 Championships in the 400m hurdles. Arna Stefanía is also the 2017 FH Athlete of the Year.
Swimmer Robert Ísak Jónsson from the Íþróttafélagið Fjörður sports club is the Athlete of Hafnarfjörður for 2017. Robert Ísak is a multiple-time national swimming champion this year. He is a cup champion in swimming with both Fjörður and Hafnarfjörður Swimming Club. Robert took part in international competitions and won awards at them. He is a four-time Nordic swimming champion this year. World Champion in the 200m individual medley, and a silver medallist at the World Championships in the 100m breaststroke and 100m backstroke. Robert is also Fjarðar's Sportsman of the Year 2017.
