Change of road connection to the Hafnarfjörður storage area
Due to roadworks by the Road Administration to double the number of lanes on the Reykjanesbraut, it is planned to alter the junction to the Hafnarfjörður storage area from the Reykjanesbraut. A ban will be introduced on left turns into the existing junction for the storage area from the Reykjanesbraut. In parallel, preparations are underway to close the junction and move it westwards on a temporary basis, until a new road via Álhellu is ready. The temporary route is expected to be ready by mid-June.
Left turn onto the existing road connection banned
Due to the Road Administration's works to dual-carry the Reykjanesbraut, it is planned to alter the road junction to the Hafnarfjörður storage area from the Reykjanesbraut. A ban will be introduced on left turns into the current junction from the Reykjanesbraut to the storage area, in accordance with a resolution by the Environment and Operations Committee recommending to the Road Administration that the left turn at the junction with the storage area be closed immediately. In parallel, preparations are underway to close the existing road connection and temporarily move it further west, until a new road via Álhellu is ready. The temporary route is expected to be ready by mid-June.
Increased safety during the ongoing dualling of the Reykjanesbraut
The reason for the closure is to better ensure the safety of road users to the storage area, as well as that of the contractor working on the dualisation of the Reykjanesbraut.. In September, ÍAV will begin work on the underpass at Straumsvík, and it is estimated that this work will continue until the autumn of 2025. During the construction, the underpass will be single-lane with a traffic light system.
