Construction in Hellisgerði
Phased refurbishment and development works are underway at Hellisgerði, and access to the area will be restricted until August. All play equipment in the area has been removed and there are construction vehicles on site. Children are directed to the outdoor recreation area at Víðistaðatún.

Phased renovation and development works are currently underway in Hellisgerði. The works in the garden began in the summer of 2022 and will continue until August 2023, when a celebratory festival is planned to mark the 100th anniversary of the public garden. Work is currently underway in front of the stage and café in the park. The lawn will be improved, and paths and seating areas will be created. The play area will be improved and the surface finished around the heart statue at the Reykjavikurveg entrance. All play equipment in the area has been removed and machinery is on site.
The garden is not suitable for visits by groups of children until August.
Shortly from Hellisgerði is Widstadatun, a beautiful public park surrounded by lava fields near Víðistaðakirkja and the Hraunbúar Scout Centre. At Víðistaðatún, everyone can find suitable entertainment. The area boasts numerous works of outdoor art, which are ideal for exploring, and children will enjoy playing with them. At Víðistaðatún, children can play on a climbing frame, a bouncy castle and a playhouse. There is also a wooded area which is fun to play in. When everyone gets hungry, you can have a barbecue in the barbecue hut which is right next to the castle. The area has a large event field where numerous events are held annually. At the moment, a Viking Festival is taking place there.
