The interplay between harbour and town

The harbour will strengthen the interaction between the harbour and the town by focusing on the shaping of the coastline, improved connections to the town centre, and the densification of the area around the harbour. The public realm is the glue of the plan, connecting the different development plots and forming a cohesive urban fabric. The plan is intended to stand the test of time, whilst also being flexible. High-quality public spaces, a diverse range of businesses and residences in close proximity, along with leisure facilities, are envisaged. In this way, the harbour will attract a vibrant community, which will contribute to improved use and experience.

Three areas with their own characteristics

An industrial estate will become a residential area.

In the Óseyrasvæðið area, which was formerly an industrial district, a residential development is planned that will have good links to the sea, the Slippsvæðið and the city centre. There will also be good access to public transport. A variety of housing types will be on offer, with an emphasis on good accessibility for cyclists and pedestrians through well-sheltered inner courtyards. Car parking for the residential area is mostly provided in basement car parks. In the Flensburg Harbour area, from the Kænan to the new Hafró building, there will be the opportunity for mixed-use development in any form.

Play

Mixed development in the Slipps area

The slipway area, from Fornubúðir towards the town centre, is envisaged as a mixed-use development, with ground floors primarily for commercial activities and upper floors for residential or office use. Emphasis is placed on low-rise development with an acceptable building mass and scale, in keeping with the character of Hafnarfjörður. The plan provides for clear pedestrian and cycle routes through the area to connect Strandstígur with Fjarðargata, from Norðurbakki to Fornubúðir via the Slippsvæðið. A public transport stop is planned opposite the Slip Area to serve residents, businesses and tourists visiting the area.

A sheltered harbour square and an attractive leisure area

The Slip Area is planned to feature a sheltered harbour square with views over the marina and the town centre, while the new buildings in the area will create opportunities for a number of restaurants, cafés and various leisure facilities. The square will feature possibilities for a fountain, children's play equipment and attractive seating areas, and is intended to enhance the area and the opportunities for residents of Hafnarfjörður to visit the harbour. Consideration is also being given to cultural heritage, and it is proposed that the memory of the slipway be commemorated in some way.

An opportunity in keeping with the times

The sailing club is moving closer to the town centre, which will increase its opportunities to expand and flourish. It is also proposed for this area to install open hot tubs, thereby creating the potential for further activities in keeping with current trends, such as sea swimming or bathing. Great emphasis is placed on connecting the town centre with the harbour through greenery, benches, footpaths, and the potential for restaurants and cafés that welcome visitors and passers-by. It is anticipated that the area will see a food market and creative industries flourish, alongside a bustling community and residents. The fishing boats of Hafnarfjörður still have their place, and the number of piers for small boats will be increased towards the town centre, which further brings out the vibrant atmosphere and unique characteristics that define the history of Hafnarfjörður.
