The final push to prepare for the opening of the new Hafnarfjörður Library in Firði has begun. Staff are working flat out to get everything in place and ready the building for its opening later in July, when visitors will finally be able to step inside the library's magnificent new home.

The work is both visual and symbolic.

One of the first things to greet visitors will be a new and unique piece of outdoor art on the steps leading up to the main entrance. There, the artist Juan Artic is working on a colourful piece where each step becomes a book, and together they form a stack of books that leads visitors into the world of literature. The work is both visual and symbolic. On their way into the library, visitors literally walk up into the world of books, where selected book titles adorn the steps, reminding them of the power of stories, reading and creativity.

Ideas from the residents

The artwork was created in collaboration with the town's residents. This spring, the Hafnarfjörður Public Library held an idea competition, encouraging residents to share the titles of their favourite books. The response was fantastic, and numerous suggestions were received. One thing that stood out was how many people wanted to see works by authors from Hafnarfjörður given a prominent place in the artwork. Others mentioned classic Icelandic works, world-famous novels and beloved children's books that have been enjoyed by generations of readers. It was not possible to include all the suggestions, but the final selection reflects the diverse literary world the library represents and the great interest shown by the town's residents in the project.

Art that delights the eye and the community

The artist Juan Artic has previously made his mark on Hafnarfjörður with colourful outdoor artworks that have received well-deserved attention. With this new work, he continues to bring art into the public space, transforming everyday structures into an experience that delights both residents and visitors. When the new library opens later this month, the first story visitors will experience will not be inside the library, but right outside its doors. There, book spines, colours and art will guide visitors up the stairs – into a world where countless new and old stories await them.

Seeing is believing.
