The first day of summer 2023 will be celebrated with a variety of festivities throughout Hafnarfjörður!
12 noon: Hafnarfjörður Cross-Country Race in the town centre of Hafnarfjörður.
The warm-up will begin at Thorsplan at 12 noon. The run will follow Strandgata and will be divided into age groups after the warm-up. There is no entry fee for the run and registration is on the door. Category winners will receive trophies and all competitors will receive medals, kindly provided by the City of Hafnarfjörður. After the race, the FH athletics department will be promoting athletics on Thorsplani, where you can try long jump and shot put. Strandgata will be closed to car traffic during the run and until the parade sets off from Víðistaðatún at 13:15.
12-15 Open house at the Hafnarfjörður Javelin Club
Welcome to darts at the Darts Club, run from 64 Reykjavikurvegur. There are, for example, four boards that can be adjusted to a seated height.
13:00-15:00 Badminton and table tennis at the sports hall on Strandgata
Visitors and passers-by are invited to try badminton and table tennis at the Hafnarfjörður Badminton Club in the sports hall on Strandgata.
13:00-18:00 Open house at the Þyt Sailing Club, Strandgata 88
Beginners and experienced sailors are invited to sail kayaks (ages 9 and over) or rowing boats, and those with experience can sail dinghies, weather permitting.
Throughout the summer, the Þyt Sailing Club will be holding open evenings on Thursdays from 5 pm to 10 pm, and on Saturdays from 10 am to 1 pm. Everyone welcome.
13:15 Parade from Thor's Square to Víðistaðatún
The route will be from Thorsplan along Strandgata, through the Town Square, onto Vesturgata, through Merkurtorg, Vesturtorg and Flókatorg, along Flókagata, then turning onto Hraunbrún and up Garðavegur, finishing at Víðistaðatún to the sound of the bugle of the Hafnarfjörður Brass Band.
13:30-16 Family programme at Víðistaðatún, organised by the Hraunbúar Scout Association.
Fun and varied scouting activities for the whole family at Víðistaðatún and the Hraunbyrgi Scout Centre. Box climbing, a climbing wall, you can try toasting marshmallows and making s'mores over a campfire, bouncy castles, boats, a giant hammock and a party tent where the band Enter name will be playing some songs at around 2 pm. A coffee stall in Hraunbyrgi and a marquee on Víðistaðatún where candy floss, crisps and popcorn will be on sale.
14:00 Summer Ukulele Concert at Hafnarfjörður Library
Ukuleles are holding a summer concert at the library on the first day of summer, playing the Ukulele (in case that needs saying) and entertaining visitors and passers-by. What's better than 13 four-string songbirds with their mouths set below their noses to celebrate. Perfect for summer, joy, and just everything!
As usual, entry is free, everyone is welcome and there's endless atmosphere, plus coffee and a snack.
