The Hafnarfjörður Run will be held for the first time on Thursday, 8th June at 8 p.m., in collaboration with the FH Athletics Department, the City of Hafnarfjörður and Fjarðarkaup.

Registration takes place here.

Framework

The Hafnarfjörður Run will join a small group of road races in Iceland, as it will actually take place on the town's streets, with roads being closed to traffic during the event. The centre of the race will be at Thorsplan, which will be both the start and finish point. There will be a varied programme before and after the race, where spectators and competitors will, among other things, be able to try their hand at various athletics events. There will be a drinks station at the 5 km mark and another at Thorsplan at the finish, where other refreshments will also be available. Competitors will have access to a baggage storage service during the race, and toilet facilities will also be provided on Strandgötu. After the race, all participants will be offered the chance to swim at the Suðurbæjarlaug, which will be open until midnight (subject to the strike being resolved).

Prize

All participants will have the chance to win fantastic prizes, which will be awarded in collaboration with the event's partners. Of particular note are the prizes for the runners who finish in the top three places, in both the men's and women's categories, which will be cash prizes alongside other prestigious awards. The cash prize amounts are as follows:

  • 1st place – 100,000 kr.
  • 2nd place – 50,000 kr.
  • 3rd place – 25,000 kr.

In addition, prizes will be awarded to the winner in each age category, as well as a grand prize draw.

Age groups

The following age categories will be in the Hafnarfjörður Run 2023:

  • 18 and under
  • 19-29 years old
  • 30-39 years old
  • 40-49 years old
  • 50-59 years old
  • 60 and over

Running route

The Hafnarfjörður Run is a 10 km road race with a course certified by the Athletics Association of Iceland. An effort has been made to limit bends and hills in the race, so the course should be ideal for setting a personal best. The race will start on Strandgata at Thorsplan and run along it towards the Suðurbæjarlaug. From there, Suðurgata will be run, and the stream will be crossed before heading up Álfaskeið, where a very flat and fast section begins. The course will then take you through the lava fields and into the North End of Hafnarfjörður, where you will run along Hjallabraut, Breiðvang and Norðurvang, among other streets. Next, the runners will take a short loop around our neighbours in Garðabær, looping around Garðaholt, before coming down to Herjólfsgata. A fast final section with a gradual descent then follows, ending back at Thorsplan.

Handling of data

Runners will collect their race packs from Fjarðarkaup. The packs can be collected at the following times:

  • 7 June: 09:00 – 18:00
  • 8 June: 09:00 – 18:30

Participants will receive a race number with a timing chip which must not be bent, as this could damage the timing device. To get free entry to the swimming pool in the evening, runners will need to show their race number.

Registration and participation fees

You can register until midnight on 7 June, but the early bird sale ends on 1 May, after which the participation fee will increase. The participation fees are as follows:

  • 18 and under: Advance sale 2,500 kr – From 25th May: 4,000 kr.
  • Adults: Advance price 4,500 kr – From 25th May: 6,000 kr.
