Saturday, 14th June at 2 p.m. will Aldís Arnardóttir, curator and director of Hafnarborg, will guide visitors around the exhibition. In harmony with matter and spirit, which is on display at Hafnarborg this summer, looking back over the long and varied career of the artist Eiríkur Smith. The exhibition is being held to mark what would have been the artist's 100th birthday this year, had he lived.

The career of Eiríkur Smith (1925-2016) was both long and varied. He tackled painting as a means of expression, and he left behind works that bear witness to a unique mastery of subjects as diverse as strict flat-plane art, expressive abstract painting, and realist works. The figure is often central, but the landscape and the works of man form a powerful setting. Over time, his approach changed significantly, both in step with the zeitgeist and because the artist consciously sought new directions.

Thus, Eiríkur's artistic career can be likened to a pendulum swinging between two poles. He seeks both engagement in dialogue with the subjective and the objective, and in the latter part of his career, periods emerge where he straddles the two. In these, one can sense the artist's conviction that life is best lived in harmony with both matter and spirit. Selected works from throughout his career will be exhibited, as well as earlier drawings from his student years in Copenhagen and Paris.

Free admission – all are welcome.
