Sketches // Sigurjón Már Svanbergsson
Sketching is not about precision but rather about capturing the main points, form and movement on paper. To achieve this…
Friday, 21 February at 6 p.m. We warmly welcome you to the opening of the exhibition. Pause, which features works by eight artists from England and Iceland. The exhibition focuses on art as a process and its ability to connect with the viewer and its environment. The artists participating in the exhibition are Anna Hrund Másdóttir, Birgir Snæbjörn Birgisson, Danny Rolph, Ingibjörg Sigurjónsdóttir, Joel Tomlin, Kristinn Már Pálmason, Peter Lamb and Vanessa Jackson. The curators are Birgir Snæbjörn Birgisson and Mika Hannula.
To to pause is when we have a tendency to linger because of a reluctance to leave. That reluctance is often driven by a poignant longing, although we don't necessarily know why or what it is we long for. What we know is simply that we have to pause. The exhibition then raises questions about what happens when we are faced with works that demand our participation and affect us. Works that, in their innocence and intimate setting, are risky.
Participants then use different methods and techniques to approach these questions. Anna Hrund and Ingibjörg work with found objects and materials that reveal a new and ephemeral lightness of being when taken out of their original context. The works of Rolph and Jackson adapt to the space and circumstances, allowing geometric, abstract forms to take centre stage. Birgir Snæbjörn and Lamb work from and after photographs, using the multi-layered manifestation of the copy to approach the intangible. The symbols and forms of Tomlin and Kristinn Már then become, when combined, their own language. All eight share the belief that art is a place of discovery – not a hiding place – and their works compel us to pause.
The book is published alongside the exhibition. Lingering, with articles by Mika Hannula. The editor is Birgir Snæbjörn Birgisson and the book's design was handled by Sigrún Sigvaldadóttir. The publisher is Hunang and the publication is supported by Myndstef and Hafnarborg.
