Sketching isn't about precision, but rather about capturing the main points, form and movement on paper. To achieve this, it often requires fearlessness, courage and even allowing myself to make mistakes. In a sketch, I let my subconscious run free; that's precisely what I do: I push the urge for perfection aside and just sketch.
The town's houses seem an everyday subject, but they bear witness to existence and time. Within them lie thick layers of memories, a collection of moments, of all that was and all that might be.
The houses rise on the paper in free and flowing lines, where the felt-tip pens on coarse cotton paper give the works a distinctive texture. Quick, decisive strokes of colour are absorbed into the surface, leaving soft lines behind.
The line is at once loose and precise, for on closer inspection, rich details emerge that give the images depth and a quiet precision. My strong personal signature lies in the tension between freedom and form, between intuition and observation.
The colours are subdued yet vibrant, the lines light yet decisive, and together this creates a visual world that is both accessible and deeper than it appears at first glance.

Sigurjón Már Svanbergsson (b. 1974) is a visual storyteller, born and raised in Akureyri but now lives in Hafnarfjörður with a studio in the Hafnarfjörður Icehouse. He is actively involved in creative work, including within the autistic and sensory community. He has been creating art since a young age. For the longest time, he has worked with black-and-white film photography, through which his eye for light and form has developed.
In recent years, he has increasingly turned to paper, creating collages, pop-up books and fabric prints. Sigurjón has taken part in numerous group exhibitions and held a solo exhibition at the Valkyrjan café in the summer of 2024.
