Screening of the documentary film Seafaring life on the fishing grounds with the innovative trawler Júlí GK 21

To mark Seafarers' Day, guests are invited to watch the documentary. Seafaring life on the fishing grounds with the innovative trawler Júlí GK 21 from 1950. The film will be shown in continuous screenings from 13:00 to 16:00 in the conference room of the Institute of Marine Research.

Júlí GK 21 was the first trawler built by the Bæjarútgerð Hafnarfjarðar, and the film paints a vivid picture of the work of hardworking Icelandic seamen in the mid-20th century. It shows fishing in salt on a side-troller and gives us an insight into a world that was – long before modern technology took over.

The film was originally released by the Harbour Board of Hafnarfjörður in 1989 to mark the 80th anniversary of the Port of Hafnarfjörður, and is of value as an important source on the history of Icelandic shipping and the lives of seafarers in the past.
