The Great Pick-up Day will be held on Sunday, 28th April 2024.
This will be the seventh time the day has been celebrated. Plokk á Íslandi runs an active group on the social media platform Facebook, where eight thousand members share photos of their foraging and outdoor activities. It is incredibly impressive that over eight thousand people share this hobby. Plokk á Íslandi, of course, has a master's league that trains daily and competes all year round, but also has enthusiasts who pick up their tongs in the spring and autumn, or who look after their patch all year round.
The Great Clear-up Day is a day for all of us
Everyone is encouraged to organise events in their local community and to encourage others to do the same. Let's encourage our community to take part, our workplace, our colleagues, our schoolmates and our neighbours on the street. Let's organise smaller events where we can get together and litter-pick an area in our local community where plastic and cardboard gather in the wind all winter long. If we can identify where the rubbish is coming from, it's worth letting the responsible parties know. Don't just let them know, but also ask them to manage their bins or containers better, as the source of much litter is often the unacceptable way rubbish bins are handled.
The day in your neighbourhood
How can we make the most of the day in the neighbourhood? Can you organise anything? The logo for the Big Clear-Up Day is on plokk.is, where everyone can download it and use it to mark their own events. Those of you interested in even more collaboration can send us an enquiry at plokk@plokk.is
Plokk is a great way to get outdoors, a great way to socialise, and everyone can take part. This is our environment, this is our future.
