Progress Times! The country's oldest reading society reopens for the autumn, and Hjalti Snær is back once again with noteworthy titles and interesting authors. Booklets about this winter's programme are available at the library.
The book for January is What Is This What? by the American writer Dave Eggers.
Valentino Achak Deng is a young boy when his village in South Sudan is attacked and destroyed. He becomes separated from his family and has to walk across the desert with hundreds of other boys, all the way to Ethiopia and later Kenya, where he stays in a refugee camp for a whole decade. Along the way, the boys struggle with starvation and disease, and witness horrific atrocities. And some end up in the lion's den.
Valentino is one of the Lost Boys of South Sudan who are eventually airlifted to the United States where they begin a new life. However, it is not all plain sailing and before long they face hardships and violence that, at its worst, is no less than that of the desert trek.
