Construction begins in earnest in late summer
The Road Administration and ÍAV signed a contract on 17th May for the dualling of the Reykjanesbraut between Krýsuvíkurvegur and Hvassahraun, along with the adjacent side roads. Tenders were opened on 5 April, with ÍAV's bid of just under four billion kroner for the project being significantly below the estimated contractor cost. Preparations are underway and construction is beginning on site. The project involves the construction of the Reykjanesbraut over a 5.6 km section, and also includes the construction of bridge structures and underpasses for motorists, pedestrians and cyclists. At Reykjanesbraut, a flyover will be built at Rauðameli, which is the site of a new future development area for the City of Hafnarfjörður. The flyover at Straumsvík will be expanded, and a connection to the Hafnarfjörður industrial area at Álhellu will be added. Surveillance points will also be established on the Reykjanesbraut, and a main path for pedestrians and cyclists will be created between Hraunavík and Straumur, along with a connection to Straumsvík. The Road Administration will oversee the project, with supervision handled by the engineering firm Hnit h/f. The work is scheduled for full completion by the end of June 2026.
