FH, the City of Hafnarfjörður and the Hafnarfjörður Sports Association (ÍBH) have joined forces and are offering football training for children in years 1-10 from 15th January. Parents can register their children on Sportabler.

Football at FH for children with disabilities

Children with disabilities in years 1 to 10 are invited to take part in a new course organised jointly by FH, the City of Hafnarfjörður and ÍBH. The sessions will take place on Wednesdays and Fridays from 4 pm to 5 pm in Dvergurinn, FH's covered sports hall.

Members meet the coaches in the foyer of Kaplakriki at the reception desk. The training fee is 50,000 krónur. Parents can use their children's leisure allowance. Training takes place twice a week with a head coach and an assistant coach.

Geir Bjarnason, the sports and leisure representative for the City of Hafnarfjörður, points out that Haukar have offered children the opportunity to train in basketball under the Special Olympics banner. It has gone well.

„It is the stated policy of the state and local authorities to give disabled children the opportunity to take part in mainstream sports. FH is answering that call,“ he says.

Train with a major sports club

„It's great that the children get to belong to a great club and can, for example, go to school in their uniforms as full members.“

Geir says the football training sessions are a welcome opportunity for the kids. „They can come along and give it a go for free. The facilities at Dvergurinn are good,“ says Geir. „There, they can be on their own terms.“

Safe and strong frame

Geir says it is important to provide children with disabilities with a good programme and environment so that they come and take part. „They must be safe in their surroundings,“ he says. It is known that many of the children start playing sports later than their non-disabled peers.

„I welcome this initiative by FH and ÍBH and have high hopes for the work. We want all children to take up sports for the social aspect,“ says Geir. „That's where they meet their friends, get some exercise and make life more enjoyable.“
