Good state of the town's nurseries for the winter

News

All children born in May 2023 and older have been offered a place in the nursery schools of the City of Hafnarfjörður for this autumn. Places in the city's nursery schools are almost fully booked. The autumn is off to a good start with a revised nursery school day.

A strong position with the new nursery day schedule

Playgroups in the City of Hafnarfjörður are well-prepared for the winter and are now almost fully staffed for the season. All children born in May 2023 and earlier have been offered a place at a playgroup in the City of Hafnarfjörður this autumn.

The Municipality of Hafnarfjörður has introduced changes to the children's nursery day, offering a shorter attendance period while maintaining the same level of care and teaching. Parents can reduce their nursery fees by up to 30%. However, as before, parents can still secure a full-time nursery place for their children if they need to – without the fees increasing from what they were.

Changes to the nursery day

A new schedule for the nursery day in Hafnarfjörður came into effect from 1 September 2024. The day's activities will now be twofold, consisting of structured activities and free time. Structured activities take place from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. every weekday. Free time and play sessions are from 7:30 a.m. to 9 a.m. and after 3 p.m.

The nursery school calendar will be 180 days and other days will be special registration days.

The registration dates are as follows:

  • Two days in October when there are winter holidays in the primary schools of Hafnarfjörður.
  • From 21 December to and including 2 January
  • Two days in February when there are half-term holidays in the primary schools of Hafnarfjörður.
  • Three days in Holy Week before Easter
  • From 10 June – 10 August
  • Children take a four-week continuous summer holiday over the summer.

The changes to the nursery day are convenient for families and help the local authority to retain skilled professionals and attract more qualified staff. With a structured split in the nursery day, it is even more likely that the professional workforce in nurseries will be better utilised with the children. It is clear that these changes have made jobs within nurseries more attractive, and recruitment has gone more smoothly than is often the case.

Reduction in nursery fees

Nursery fees for 30 hours or less per week will be significantly reduced, by up to 30%. Fees for 40 hours per week will remain unchanged.

Example: From 1 September 2024, the monthly fees will be kr. 41,042 for 40 hours per week and kr. 19,962 for 30 hours per week.- The difference is kr. 21,080 per month, or kr. 231,880 per year, based on eleven months and one month of summer holiday. As the number of hours decreases, the fees also decrease, as can be seen in the attached table, which shows the fees including the meal charge.
