The Hafnarfjörður Town Council and the Sports and Leisure Committee today held an awards ceremony for athletes competing for teams from Hafnarfjörður, The awardees included Icelandic champions, cup winners, Nordic champions, world champions and recipients of special achievement awards, as well as the selections for the Sportswoman, Sportsman and Sports Team of Hafnarfjörður for 2020.

The Hafnarfjörður Town Council and the Sports and Leisure Committee today held an awards ceremony for athletes competing for teams from Hafnarfjörður, The awardees included Icelandic champions, cup winners, Nordic champions, world champions and recipients of special achievement awards, as well as the selections for the Sportswoman, Sportsman and Sports Team of Hafnarfjörður for 2020.

This year, over 300 individuals have won national and/or cup championships with teams from Hafnarfjörður, and they are especially congratulated on their success. At the ceremony, 10 million was awarded from a fund established by Rio Tinto in Iceland, ÍBH and the City of Hafnarfjörður, which is intended to support sports activities for under-18s.

The selection of Hafnarfjörður's sportswoman, sportsman and sports team took place. Hafnarfjörður's 2020 elite team is Men's and women's senior teams in athletics at Fimleikafélag Hafnarfjarðar.

The team won every athletics competition that counted towards points during the year. They also won numerous titles in both championships and cup competitions.

Golf player Guðrún Brá Björgvinsdóttir from Keili Golf Club is the 2020 Sportswoman of Hafnarfjörður.

Guðrún Brá is the 2020 Icelandic Women's Golf Champion and has won for three years in a row. Guðrún Brá has been among the country's leading golfers for many years. She won the Icelandic Stroke Play Championship this summer and became the GSÍ points champion, having won three of the five tournaments of the year. Guðrún Brá plays on the Ladies European Tour, where she has full playing rights for this year and next. Guðrún is ranked 125th on the LET European Tour Order of Merit and 949th on the women's professional golf world ranking.

Swimmer Anton Sveinn McKee of Hafnarfjörður Swimming Club is the Athlete of Hafnarfjörður for 2020.

Anton Sveinn is SH's swimmer and the Swimming Association of Iceland's swimmer of 2020. He became a multiple Icelandic champion during the year, as well as the Icelandic champion in medley relay. He set three Icelandic records, which were also new Nordic records, in the 200m and 100m breaststroke. Anton Sveinn was the first Icelandic swimmer to qualify for the Tokyo Olympic Games. He has also qualified for the European Swimming Championships, which has been postponed until 2021.
