The Municipality of Hafnarfjörður celebrates its 118th anniversary today, Monday, 1 June 2026. Third-grade pupils gathered on Thorsplan today on the anniversary and sang in the summer.

The Municipality of Hafnarfjörður celebrates its 118th anniversary today, Monday, 1 June 2026. The municipality was granted borough status on 1 June 1908. The town has since grown and prospered. On 1 June 1908, the town had a population of 1,469. As of the start of 2026, the town has a population of just under 32,398. The anniversary was celebrated at Thorsplan, where the annual choir festival for Year 3 pupils took place this morning, ably conducted by Guðrún Árný.

This year's anniversary falls on a beautiful, leisurely Monday. We encourage residents of Hafnarfjörður and friends of the town to enjoy all or some of what Hafnarfjörður has to offer today, as well as on most other days: the great outdoors, exercise, culture, shopping and dining.
Summer opening and new themed exhibition at the Hafnarfjörður Museum of Local History
Summer opening begins at all museums of the Hafnarfjörður Museum of Local History. As of today. On Friday, a new themed exhibition was opened in the Packhouse of the Folk Museum, and it is called The handball town of Hafnarfjörður. The exhibition tells the story of handball in Hafnarfjörður since 1925.
Music and Town Life, The First Cultural and Health Walk of the Summer
Guided town walks are offered every Wednesday this summer. The first walk begins at 8 p.m. on Wednesday, 3rd June. The walks are a collaboration between the Hafnarfjörður Library, the Hafnarfjörður Museum of Local History, Hafnarborg and the Healthy Town of Hafnarfjörður.
Jónatan Garðarsson leads the first walk. The walk will take you through the town centre, and Jónatan will recall the strong connection between music and town life. The talk will cover Friðrik Bjarnason, Vinaminni, the youth prom, Skiphól, Skútuna, the Heart of Hafnarfjörður, and much more. The walk starts from Hafnarborg.
