Let's say goodbye to the old year and welcome the new one TOGETHER! Let's make 2022 the year of togetherness! Let's look after our families, laugh a lot, love deeply and, above all, make memories TOGETHER!

About the Saman Group

The group's background is that around the turn of the millennium, 1999-2000, a group of people came together and organised a campaign under the slogan ”Family Together at a Turning Point'. The campaign involved, amongst other things, distributing postcards to households across the country, placing adverts in various media, and writing articles for newspapers. The campaign was repeated a year later, and the group decided to continue working together on prevention in connection with events where an increase in substance use among young people was likely.

The group set the following objectives:

  • To increase collaboration among people working in prevention. The members of the group are united by working in some capacity with and for children and young people. This work is particularly concerned with prevention, parenting, education, treatment and counselling.
  • The group works to raise awareness of the threat posed to children and young people by the prevalence of alcohol and drugs in society, to draw parents' attention to their responsibility for raising their children, and to encourage positive family communication. The message has been conveyed through the media, with discussions and advertisements. The group emphasises that its work should reach all parts of the country.
  • The group's work aims to strengthen and support parents in their parenting role. The message is about the importance of the responsibility for the care and upbringing of their children, and it emphasises that parents should spend as much time as possible with them. This is communicated to parents in clear terms, that they do not buy or provide alcohol to children – and are reminded that the law sets the age limit at 20 – that rules on curfews are respected and are warned of the dangers that unsupervised parties, outdoor festivals, and the consumption of alcohol and other drugs pose to their children.

The results of work like this, of course, are not immediately apparent. Patience is important when it comes to preventative work. Preventative work is, in fact, an investment in the future. What the SAMAN group focuses on above all else is the message to parents; after all, they are the ones who matter most in preventative work. The group believes it is putting the weapons into their hands by encouraging and informing them. Most importantly of all, parents should spend time with their children, get to know them very well and be their friends. Parents can, in fact, be the best at prevention. In early 2003, Björgvin Ólafsson, a graphic designer, was commissioned to design a logo for the group. The heart has often featured in the group's work, both in its collaboration and in its partnerships with others involved in prevention. It was therefore decided that the heart would continue to be a strong element of the group's image, as compassion is a central theme in its work. The SAMAN symbol therefore reflects the work of the group well.

The SAMAN Group's Christmas Appeal

The SAMAN group's Christmas campaign is intended to encourage parents to enjoy spending time with their children and teenagers and to accompany them during Advent. The initiative takes the form of a Christmas calendar that reminds us that spending time with family is important. December is usually a busy month, and people are often on the move. It is especially important to remember that spending time with your family is important. All year round.
