  1. General presentations

    • 1806356 – Increased provision for people with dementia

In August 2018, the Hafnarfjörður Family Council expressed its concern about long waiting lists for day care for people with dementia. It was decided to establish a working group with the sole task of finding premises in Hafnarfjörður for a day care service. The working group submitted its findings last November. It was decided to lease a space in Drafnarhúsið. Drafnarhúsið already runs a day care service for people with dementia, and this new space would therefore be an addition to that activity. This new space would accommodate 10 to 12 individuals. In the capital region, 163 people are on the waiting list for a day service, and 26 of them are waiting specifically for Drafnarhúsið. With this new space, we would have shortened the waiting list at Drafnarhús by almost half. In November, a letter was sent to the Ministry of Health informing them that the City of Hafnarfjörður was ready with a space for day care for 10–12 individuals and requesting the funding that the state is responsible for paying. In December, a response was received from the ministry, in which the request was rejected.
Local authorities are not obliged to provide accommodation, but in light of the problem, the City of Hafnarfjörður decided to begin the work of finding premises so that it could accommodate those on the waiting list.
The Family Council regrets this decision by the ministry and calls for it to be reconsidered.
