Record applications in the armed forces – Want extra hands?
More people have applied to Verkherinn this year than ever before. Verkherinn is an employment scheme for young people from Hafnarfjörður with reduced work capacity. Verkherinn is now appealing to companies that want to take on enthusiastic young people for free. It's a win-win for the young people and the companies.
The Labour Party for young people
„Verkherinn is an employment programme for young people from Hafnarfjörður aged 16-20 with reduced work capacity or increased service needs. The aim of Verkhersinn is to assist young people in taking their first steps into the world of work. With us, young people receive education and training in work ethics, financial literacy and other aspects related to participation in working life,“ writes Auður Björk Kvaran, director at Verkhérinn, in the latest issue of Fjarðarfréttir, Hafnfirsk æska. „The Work Camp is active over the summer period, and in recent years, numerous young people have taken part. It gives them the opportunity to try out the general job market and experience working in different workplaces. In recent years, the young people have had the opportunity to work in shops, nurseries, play schemes and various businesses in the town. The young people are accompanied by a member of staff who provides them with support in their work so that they can make a full contribution to their role,“ she says.
More applications than ever
„Applications to the Work Experience Programme have never been higher than this year, and we are delighted that more young people are interested in working with us over the summer,“ writes Auður. To offer a diverse range of opportunities for all participants this summer, Verkherinn needs to partner with a considerable number of employers. „This gives companies and other employers the opportunity to partner with Verkherinn and recruit more staff to work on a variety of projects.“
The young people's tasks can vary greatly between locations, but popular tasks have included doing outdoor jobs, taking simple orders, stocking shelves, car washing and much more. „We have had a great deal of success working with a wide range of Hafnarfjörður businesses over the years, and are now looking for more companies to join us for the summer.“
