New paths in Hafnarfjörður

Work on new footpaths and cycle paths west of Reykjavikurveg, from Hraunbrún to the municipal boundary with Garðabær, is about to begin. The works will continue throughout the summer.

The project involves creating a separate network of footpaths and cycle paths running parallel to Reykjavikurvegur on the west side, in the green space between residential buildings and the road. At present, there is a shared foot and cycle path at this location. It will be developed as a footpath, with a new cycle path created alongside it.

Progress in sustainable transport

The path begins at Hraunbrún and crosses Hjallabraut at the traffic lights at the junction with Reykjavíkurvegur, joining the existing path at the municipal boundary with Garðabær.

The works are not expected to have a major impact on traffic, although there will be some disruption due to the works at the junction of Hjallabraut and Reykjavíkurvegur. The traffic lights are scheduled to be upgraded alongside these works.

VSÓ Consulting handled the preliminary and detailed design. Betri samgöngur is the client in collaboration with the City of Hafnarfjörður. The paths will then be handed over to the City of Hafnarfjörður upon completion of the works, once all surfacing has been finished. The City of Hafnarfjörður will own the paths and be responsible for their maintenance and operation.

Yes, the transport will be safer when the path is fully finished.
