Primary school car park open for caravans

Announcements

In recent years, the Municipality of Hafnarfjörður has offered owners of recreational vehicles the opportunity to park their equipment at the municipality's primary schools while they are closed. This refers to equipment such as caravan trailers, caravan annexes, caravans, motorhomes, and other items related to summer and travel. The offer is limited to the car parks of the council's primary schools and is valid until 10 August 2025.

Outdoor equipment at the primary schools

Hafnarfjörður is now offering owners of recreational vehicles the opportunity to park their equipment at the municipality's primary schools while they are closed, just as in previous years. This includes equipment such as caravan trailers, campervans, caravans, motorhomes, and other vehicles related to summer and travel.

Often, it is difficult to place this equipment within the grounds without the devices becoming an obstruction or a nuisance to others. Therefore, it is ideal to use these spaces. The offer only applies to car parks at the local authority's primary schools, not to nurseries that operate during the summer, or to the town's secondary schools, which are not part of the local authority's operations.

The offer is valid until 10 August 2025.

The primary schools' car parks will be open for such equipment until Sunday, 10th August. On the morning of Monday, 11th August, all equipment must have been removed from all of the City of Hafnarfjörður's primary school grounds. Please note that there is no security or CCTV in the area, and all equipment remains entirely at the owners' own risk.

This offer applies only to equipment in active use during the summer season, and not to numberless vehicles and equipment/gear that require year-round storage. Equipment, trailers and vehicles without number plates are removed at the owner's expense.

Police By-law for the Borough of Hafnarfjörður

Regarding vehicles and traffic, the Police Ordinance of the Municipality of Hafnarfjörður states that: “… on public roads, nothing may be placed or set down that obstructs traffic. It is forbidden to park vehicles on pavements, open spaces, undeveloped plots of land and paths. The parking of trailers and caravans, such as horseboxes, caravans, trailers, trailers for boats and similar equipment, as well as motorhomes deemed to cause inconvenience, unsanitary conditions or a hazard, is prohibited on streets and public car parks.

Environmental and planning services are authorised to, following prior warning, e.g. by means of a sticker with a warning message, to remove and impound vehicles that contravene sections 1–5 of the Local By-laws, vehicles left without number plates on land adjacent to public thoroughfares, streets and public car parks, and vehicles left abandoned in open areas. The registered owner and/or the person in charge shall be notified of the removal and shall bear the cost of the removal and storage of the vehicle.
