Registration for the Hafnarfjörður Summer Job Scheme for summer 2026 opens tomorrow, 23 April, via the scheme's registration system, Vala.

The main role of the Work Club is to provide pupils in the upper years of primary school with constructive summer jobs and education in a safe working environment. All pupils in Years 8, 9 and 10 are offered the opportunity to work in general gardening teams on behalf of the council. In addition, pupils in Year 9 and Year 10 have the opportunity to apply for jobs with partners, for example, sports clubs, the Scouts, nurseries and after-school clubs.

A list of partners can be found on the Vinnuskólinn website. The list is updated regularly as the number of partner companies increases.

Working hours depend on age.

The daily working hours for young people depend on their age and may vary depending on whether they are working in a general gardening group or with a partner organisation – the arrangement for general groups is as follows:

  • The working hours for 14-year-olds are 3.5 hours a day, from Monday to Thursday (14 hours in total).
week). On alternate weeks, work is done in the morning (08:30-12:00) and on the other, in the afternoon (12:30-
    16:00).
  • The working hours for 15-year-olds are 3.5 hours a day, from Monday to Thursday. Last week
From 20th to 23rd July, the teenagers work longer days to finish their sessions. Every other week there is
one before midday (08:30-12:00) and the other in the afternoon (12:30-16:00).
  • Working hours for 16-year-olds are 7 hours a day from Monday to Thursday. Morning work is from 08:30-12:00 and afternoon work is from 12:30-16:00.
  • The daily working hours of young people with partners are always determined by the workplaces in
compliance with the Regulations on the Employment of Children and Young Persons.
But how many hours are teenagers allowed to work over the summer?
  • 14-year-olds work 71 hours.
  • 15-year-olds work 92 hours.
  • 16-year-olds work 118 hours.

Pay according to age

16-year-olds (born 2010) are paid 1,560 krónur per hour, plus holiday pay on top. It is very important that 16-year-olds submit how much they intend to use.
Personal allowance. It must therefore be submitted to the email address launafulltruar@hafnarfjordur.

15-year-olds (born 2011) will be paid 1,248 krónur per hour, plus holiday pay. 14-year-olds (born 2012) will be paid 936 krónur per hour, plus holiday pay. Holiday pay is paid with the wages, not into separate holiday accounts, for all age groups.

All students who enrol in the work experience programme will be offered a placement, but if enrolments are received late, the chances of being able to accommodate students' preferences for placement locations are reduced. For those planning to apply for jobs with partners, please bear in mind that the Work Experience Office does not arrange these jobs for applicants; instead, the partners themselves select who will be employed. Therefore, it is best to complete applications for these jobs by 11 May, as on that day, lists of applicants will be forwarded to the partners.

All enquiries regarding jobs with partners should be directed to them directly, as employment arrangements can vary.

For young people who are not ready for mainstream work experience groups without specific support, Kletturinn offers a dedicated work experience group for those who require an individualised approach with support. The work places a strong emphasis on a positive experience and the engagement of young people, but further information can be obtained from the email address kletturinn@hafnarfjordur.is
