The aim is for older people in Hafnarfjörður to be able to live independently for as long as possible. Social activities, exercise and a variety of support are on offer. Servant leadership is kept in mind.
Support at home
Apply for supportIt is important that older people can maintain their independence and live at home for as long as possible in the most normal circumstances.
Support services
The service provides assistance with housework and personal care that older people or other adults in the household are unable to manage. The service is available during the day, in the evenings and at weekends. Healthcare professionals and family members can apply for the service on behalf of individuals and log in to the City of Hafnarfjörður's My Pages portal with their own digital ID, specifying who is submitting the application and who the service user is.

Other services that can be obtained to support living in your own home are Chauffeur service and day-dreaming.
Repayments
If the service needs are more flexible, an agreement can be made to hire staff as required at the home. The council pays for this. The number of hours depends on the level of care required but can be up to 60 hours per month.

Discount on property taxes
Older people and disabled benefit recipients who own a flat receive a discount on property tax.
To be eligible for a discount, you must:
- to own their own flat in Hafnarfjörður
- be at least 67 years old or be 75% disabled
- do not have rental income from the property in question
- have no carer other than a partner who lives in the household
Social rented housing
Low-income senior citizens can also apply. Social housing from the council to get support to live in their own home.
