Comprehensive services for refugees

In Hafnarfjörður, a special support service for refugees operates. Most of them are families or single parents with children. Hafnarfjörður places great emphasis on giving people a warm welcome and ensuring they become active participants through work and leisure activities.

The service is comprehensive and varied. Examples of projects include:

  • Help with finding accommodation.
  • Financial assistance.
  • Education about Icelandic society.
  • Icelandic course.
  • A course for women to reduce isolation.
  • Assistance with entitlement matters regarding tax and benefits.
  • Support the reunification of families.
  • Collaboration with schools and nurseries.
  • Collaboration with sports clubs offering recreational activities.
  • Close collaboration with the libraries on various events.
  • Child protection matters that may arise.
  • To care for unaccompanied minors who have applied for protection.

All individuals are followed through the entire system. The team working in the department has a diverse background, including Spanish- and Arabic-speaking advisors.

We work in close cooperation with various interest groups, for example Centre for multiculturalism, UNICEF, The Red Cross, The ‘78 Association, Women and more.
