News

On average, residents of Hafnarfjörður fill sixteen containers of garden waste during the spring clean-up each year. This year's spring clean-up days will be from 8th to 11th May. The town will be getting into its Sunday best and will be ready for a fantastic summer, its visitors, and some good times.

Now we're getting stuck in!

From 8th to 11th May 2025, a clean-up day will take place in Hafnarfjörður under the title CLEAN UP HAFNARFJÖRÐUR. During this time, residents of Hafnarfjörður can dispose of garden waste in a container within every neighbourhood, at each primary school.

The containers will be at the schools from the morning of Thursday, 8th May until 5 p.m. on Sunday, 11th May. Residents of Hafnarfjörður are encouraged to use the service or to take their bags directly to Sorpa. Please note that Sorpa accepts garden waste free of charge.

Let's take an active part and use this service.

Residents are encouraged to use recycled packaging or reusable bags when cleaning. Please note that garden waste must not be put in bags in the bin; instead, the contents of the bags should be emptied directly into the bin.. It is also advisable, where possible, to collect garden waste in a compost heap in a convenient place in the garden and use it for composting.

Residents in all neighbourhoods of Hafnarfjörður are encouraged to take an active part in the clean-up, and it is ideal to get to work in the garden, prune bushes and flowerbeds in the run-up to and during the clean-up days.

The town also encourages its residents to look around the nearby patches when they are clearing their gardens, and to pick up anything that doesn't belong there.

Let's keep the vegetation in check.

In light of recent events, special attention is drawn to the fact that landowners are required to keep the growth of trees and shrubs on their land within the property boundaries. Tree growth can cause inconvenience and even danger to pedestrians and motorists. Plot owners are also advised that specific regulations apply to the construction of a boundary wall and fence on the plot, which it is important to familiarise themselves with.

Let's clean up Hafnarfjörður!

Let's clean, reuse, sort and pick!
