Áshamar Nursery School – „Really beautifully designed and smart“

The Áshamar nursery school will accommodate 120 children.

Work on the brand-new Áshamar nursery school in the Hamranesh district is on schedule. It is scheduled to open at the beginning of April. Outdoor learning and a relaxed approach to work will be the focus at the nursery school, which is located at Áshamar 9. There are places available and children are welcome. 

Mayor and forRepresentatives from the Mayor's Department for Education and Public Health visited the nursery school and inspected the works this week. It is clear that there is great excitement about the beautiful new building. It will have space for 120 children and will be the 19th school in the municipality. 

„A really beautifully designed and smart school that will look after the children and staff well. The building is a novelty here in the country, as a nursery school has never been built in this way before. This is definitely something we will make more use of in the future,“ says Valdimar Víðisson, the mayor, who was inspecting the works this week. 

„School will begin in the nursery at the beginning of April, and I look forward to watching the school grow and flourish. The surroundings are exceptionally beautiful, well-suited to outdoor learning. The vision set by Framtíðarfólk ehf. suits the location and the surrounding nature perfectly. I look forward to working with everyone involved with the school.“ 

Hafnarfjörður Municipality and Framtíðar fólk ehf. signed a service agreement for the operation of the nursery school in January.   

Beautifully designed for children

Fanney Dóróthe Halldórsdóttir, Director of the Education and Public Health Department, says the school is beautifully designed with bright and spacious rooms. „It creates a warm and stimulating environment for children and staff. There is plenty of wall space, which gives the children freedom to play and create in this diverse environment that Hamranesið is,“ she says after the visit.  

„The school has great potential to utilise the environment as a “third teacher', with well-organised, bright areas and a large school playground that offers a strong connection with nature and opportunities for physical activity. This contributes to the children's well-being, as they have both ample space to explore their surroundings and a safe environment in which to develop through play." 

An inspiring environment

Fanney says the new school makes a huge difference to the families of Hafnarfjörður in the Hamranes community. „The large, well-organised school grounds offer a variety of physical activities and a connection with nature, which strengthens both the children's physical and social skills.“  

She says the premises provide staff with exceptionally good working conditions that are in keeping with modern approaches to nursery education. „Good working conditions for staff ensure that the children receive support from professionals who have both sufficient space and facilities to provide a quality education,“ she says.
