Hamranesskóli rises – „We will be a strong team“

„I want to start now,“ says Guðbjörg Norðfjörð, head teacher of Hamranesskóli, who went on a site visit with representatives from the City of Hafnarfjörður and Ístak last Friday. The situation was reviewed and the school, which is currently under construction, was inspected. Gudbjörg says the construction is well advanced.

„In some places, the walls have been painted,“ she says. „But there's still plenty left to do.“ "We went through all the corridors and you can see that something is in place in each spot. There's a picture on everything." Gudbjörg says she looked over the area, imagining children in the corridors and how they will sit in the window boxes.
„They are deep in many places. This is brilliant,“ she says, explaining how she plans to meet her parents and tell them about the situation as spring approaches.
First phase ready in 2027
The school will be brought into use in two phases. The first phase of Hamranesskóli will be ready in autumn 2027, with the aim of completing the entire school in 2028. Work on the site will begin shortly.
Hamranesskóli will be a comprehensive school for children aged 12 months to 16 years. The school will be built according to an ambitious philosophy and will offer exciting opportunities for innovation in school activities. The school will house a after-school club and a youth centre, along with a branch of the Hafnarfjörður Music School.
The contract with Ístak was signed at the Hafnarfjörður town offices last summer. The school will be the twelfth in the municipality of Hafnarfjörður and the tenth run by the town. It will cover 8,800 square metres.
Excited for the new school
„I'm planning to start teaching next autumn – at least for the children in Years 1 to 4. I can't see any other way than us moving into the building. Often, when new schools are built, they start out in containers or other temporary premises. But given the current situation, we'll start operations in the building straight away.“
Guðbjörg says there will be a number of children in the Hamranes district, which is still being developed. „I have no doubt at all that they will be happy with their school. We will have solutions, resources and projects for everyone, whatever their circumstances.“
She looks around at the care home rising opposite the school, at the surrounding nature. „I see so many opportunities. We have the nature for outdoor teaching. Yes, Hamranesskóli looks fantastic,“ she says finally.
„We will be a strong team at Hamranesskóli.“
