Six blocks of flats received Swan Certification

Hafnarfjörður a leader in Swan Certification 

The largest project to be certified by the Swan to date is in Hafnarfjörður. The construction contractor Eykt was recently awarded its first Swan licence for the block of flats at Áshamrar 12-26 in Hafnarfjörður. This involves six blocks of flats, totalling around 18,000 m² and 154 apartments. 

Mayor Valdimar Víðisson congratulates them. „We are extremely proud that Hafnarfjörður is at the forefront when it comes to environmentally friendly buildings. This isn't just about houses, but about a better community for residents, now and for the future.“ 

According to figures from the Environmental and Energy Institute, there are more Svans-certified flats in Hafnarfjörður than anywhere else. In fact, more than half of all Svans-certification projects are right here in the town. The City of Hafnarfjörður has supported this trend by offering companies discounts on plots and road construction fees for environmentally certified construction projects. 

Important for the property market

Guðrún Lilja Kristinsdóttir, Managing Director of the Swan, presented the award recently. She is quoted on the Swan's website as saying that the project is a particularly important step for the Icelandic property market.  

„The project significantly enhances the selection of Swan-certified flats,“ she says. Already, a number of flats have been brought to market, both those that have received certification and those still in the certification process. „And so, it is hoped that demand for such flats will grow.“ 

The block of flats at Áshamar is not the only environmentally friendly project Eykt is building. The construction contractor is also involved in several other Swan-certified projects as the main contractor. According to the Swan, it thus strengthens its position as one of the leading players in Swan-certified construction in the country. 

Eykt proud of the certification

„We at Eykt are incredibly proud to have received our first Swan Certification for a block of flats at Áshamar 12–26 in Hafnarfjörður,“ says Páll Daníel Sigurðsson, Managing Director of Eykt. The award marks an important milestone in Eykt's history and confirms its guiding principle of building with quality, integrity and sustainability as its guide.  

He points out that Eykt has just completed an audit of its integrated management system with the re-certification of the ISO 9001 quality standard. Also a maintenance audit of ISO 14001 environmental matters and ISO 45001 safety matters.  The audit was carried out by representatives from BSI. 

„We are extremely grateful to all our dedicated staff and partners who were involved in this project. The result shows what we can achieve together when ambition and quality are our guiding principles.“ 

Extensive requirements met

Strict requirements are made to ensure both environmental responsibility and quality with Swan Certification, including: 

• Material selection where harmful substances are restricted 
• Moisture barriers that promote healthy indoor air 
• Energy consumption shall be within certain limits. 
• Daylight where daylight design is required 

For buyers, the Swan certification for homes is therefore a mark of quality, confirming that the building has been designed and constructed with the long-term interests of its occupants and the environment in mind. 

Therefore, Swan-certified housing is not just an environmentally friendly choice. It is a mark of quality for buyers, ensuring that the homes are designed with the long-term interests of residents and the environment in mind.
