Hafnarfjörður now offers answers in the blink of an eye with the chatbot Aud the Gull. It is powered by artificial intelligence and provides accurate answers to all general enquiries about the town's services. "A technological revolution makes this possible," says the Chief Technology Officer, who is proud of Aud.

 

The first AI-based chatbot

Auður, a chatbot that answers questions about the services of the City of Hafnarfjörður, has been launched on the city's website. Auður is the gull in the top right-hand corner of the homepage, as the gull is part of the marine life and harbours that are our speciality. It is quick, responds rapidly and maintains a conversation with enquirers.

  • What can you ask Auð about? Everything concerning the services of the City of Hafnarfjörður.
  • What can't be asked about? The status of personal matters with the town.

The chatbot Auður improves the service and experience for residents on the website. It is quick to respond and provides human-like answers. Auður is powered by OpenAI. Hafnarfjörður is the first municipality to use this approach for its chatbot, as it is powered solely by artificial intelligence.

A revolution in the council's service

Is this a revolution? „Yes, we're using technology we couldn't use a year ago,“ says Garðar Rafn Eyjólfsson, a systems analyst with web management. „That's the main revolution and we're the first to take these steps,“ he says. „This is the beginning of something even bigger and is going to change the user experience on websites.“

But does Auður never give the wrong answer? „Yes, if he looks up the wrong information. But we're tidying up and he's learning, so that very rarely happens and only in exceptional circumstances.“

“Proud? Yes, very,„ replies Gardar. “Our new chatbot has attracted a great deal of attention from other companies and local authorities. There is a high demand to take these steps, as it is a revolution in service," says Gardar.

„In a very short time, this has happened and these opportunities are opening up. It's amazing and I encourage people to give it a try. I'd be surprised if you could get a response from the town any quicker. This is a unique service.“
