The open playground at Spóaás as new
The open-play pitch at Spóaás has rarely, if ever, looked better. This pitch is among those being upgraded this year. Up to five of the 70 open-play pitches are refurbished each year.
70 open playgrounds in Hafnarfjörður
The open playground at Spóaás is magnificent after being refurbished this summer. New surfacing has now been laid under the brand-new equipment, the steps have been repaired and the uneven paving stones have been fixed.
There used to be a wooden platform under the play equipment. It was demolished and the old equipment replaced with new, as it was getting old. The sandpit was removed. We had to wait for a dry spell to lay the new surface, the artificial grass, but underneath it is cushioned to soften the impact if the children fall.
Up to five courses renewed each year
There are 70 open playgrounds in the town of Hafnarfjörður. Staff from the service centre inspect them annually, assess their condition and carry out repairs with the help of contractors. Each year, an average of 3-5 playgrounds are refurbished and others are repaired. A certified inspection is carried out on all of them, and anything that is faulty is repaired. Playgrounds at nurseries and primary schools are also inspected.
The next open-air playground to be transformed is between Einihlíð and Bjarmahlíð; a playground that is long overdue. New equipment has been purchased and work will begin on it next week.
They opened at Einihlíð, Hörðuvelli and Álfaberg next.
More open playgrounds will be like new after the summer. Once the work at Einihlíð is complete, the plan is to refurbish the open playground at Hörðuvelli. There, the gravel under the play equipment will be replaced with artificial grass. Then, a small open playground at Álfaberg is scheduled for this autumn.
We encourage residents to familiarise themselves with A diverse range of playgrounds and football pitches on the town's map website.. It can be good fun for the whole family to try different parks and those between neighbourhoods.
