A singing, happy singer on Holt gets the first two-wheeled bin.
The distribution of new dual-chamber rubbish bins began in the Holt area of Hafnarfjörður yesterday. Singer, teacher and Holt resident Guðrún Árný Karlsdóttir was the first of Hafnarfjörður's residents to receive her new bin, plastic basket and paper bag, singing with joy as she did so. All households will receive one new dual-compartment bin for food and general waste.
All households receive a new rubbish bin, delivered and handed over for their use.
The distribution of new dual-chamber rubbish bins began in the Holt area of Hafnarfjörður yesterday. Singer, teacher and Holt resident Guðrún Árný Karlsdóttir was the first of Hafnarfjörður's residents to receive her new bin, a plastic basket and a paper bag, singing with joy as she did so. All private households will receive one new dual-compartment bin for food and general waste, and blocks of flats will receive new bins for food waste. Mayor Rósa Guðbjartsdóttir, along with a distinguished group of staff, presented the singer with a new bin, offering encouragement and their thanks in advance for her active participation in this important environmental project, which is coordinated among the municipalities in the capital region.
Got three containers by the house wall at home.
The new sorting system means that, by law, four waste streams will now be collected from every household in the town. Other types of waste must be taken directly to the appropriate containers at Sorpa or to nearby kerbside containers. Guðrún Árný and her husband, Sveinbjörn Enoksson, were presented with the first two-chambered bin in Hafnarfjörður yesterday. The two existing bins at their home were re-labelled for plastic on the one hand and paper on the other. „We are among those residents who have a relatively new shelter for two bins, but now a third one is being added, and that complicates matters. We're going to take the temperature of the need at home this summer and will then either expand the shelter or request another two-chambered container in the autumn. I'm embarrassingly excited about this,“ says Guðrún Árný. Residents in Hafnarfjörður are encouraged to adopt new sorting methods, and to try out a new system and a number of bins this summer and into the autumn, in order to get the best idea of their household's needs. In the autumn, it will be possible to purchase another 240L two-chamber bin for plastic and paper and to replace it with a 240L plastic bin and a 240L paper bin.
Reduce waste and reuse resources
With the new household sorting system in the southwest corner, a very big step is being taken in the municipalities' environmental work. With correct sorting, it is possible to reduce waste and reuse valuable materials instead of throwing them away. „I'm going to take this all the way. I care a great deal about the environment and the future, and now the big moment has arrived. The moment when household sorting will be taken firmly in hand. It's all about the right mindset and thinking in solutions.“ says Guðrún Árný, singing with joy.
