The smaller floating quay in Hafnarfjörður harbour will be demolished.

The small floating quay in Hafnarfjörður harbour is to be dismantled. The stone jetty at the harbour will be breached and the quay moved to the site of Vélsmiðja Orms and Víglundur, where it will be cut down and removed from the sea.

The appearance of the harbour is changing

Vélsmiðja Orms og Víglundar ehf. has requested permission and cooperation from the Port of Hafnarfjörður to dismantle the company's smaller floating quay on its plot at Óseyrarbraut 31. The Harbour Board approved this at its meeting today and emphasises that the demolition should proceed as quickly as possible. It also stipulated that the stone jetty be restored to its original condition immediately after the quay is brought ashore.

Guðmundur Fylkisson, chairman of the Harbour Board, describes how the breakwater where Ormur and Víglundur are located must be breached to bring the floating quay ashore.

„Then you need good weather and high tide. So there's an opportunity twice a month to move the pontoon,“ he says, emphasising that permission for the works from the relevant authorities has yet to be received. The harbour has now permitted the breakwater to be breached during the move. Then the move can proceed.

Gudmundur says that after the floating cage is cut down, the scrap metal will be taken down to the quay and transported away. „That way, we don't have to move the cage through the town,“ he says, celebrating the milestone.

„It is a long-awaited milestone for the small pontoon to be removed. We welcome the opportunity to play our part in moving the pontoon in the most convenient way possible.“
