Let's spend the weekend together in Hafnarfjörður.
There will be a real atmosphere of adventure and culture in Hafnarfjörður this weekend. Elves are taking over Hellisgerði, artists and curators are welcoming guests at Hafnarborg, there is a new exhibition at the Litla Gallerý, and the town's museums are welcoming visitors. It's ideal to get an early start, take a stroll around the town centre and enjoy what Hafnarfjörður has to offer.
The Elves Take Over Hellisgerði
The biggest family event of the weekend is without a doubt The Elf Festival in Hellisgerði on Sunday, 16th August from 1 pm to 4 pm.. Then one of the town's most beautiful gardens fills with elves, music, games and adventures for children and the young at heart.
Performing on stage are, among others:
- The Sports Elf and Solla
- Thorri and Thura,
- Dance elves of the Hafnarfjörður School of Choreography
- Benedikt the house-elf.
- and himself Páll Óskar.
There will be life and fun all over the garden with face painting, a circus workshop, soap bubbles, candy floss and outdoor games.
Artist and Curator Talk at Hafnarborg
This weekend is also the last chance to see two of Hafnarborg's summer exhibitions. We will get a unique insight into the exhibitions with an artist talk and a curator talk.
- Saturday, 15th August at 2 p.m. the artist takes Helgi Þorgils Friðjónsson meets guests and discusses her solo exhibition Big world. A dreamlike reality and reflections on human existence and its relationship with nature meet there. The exhibition closes on Sunday, 16 August.
- Sunday, 16th August at 2 p.m. takes Daría Sól Andrews, Curator then for visitors, providing an insight into Sveinn Fannar Jóhannsson's exhibition, May show signs of minor defects. In his work, Sveinn works with, among other things, found photographs and material that has been moved from its original context. The exhibition also ends on Sunday.
Hafnarborg is open from 12–17 and admission to the museum and both talks is free.
Sound in the Little Gallery
Art lovers can also make their way to the Little Gallery this weekend. The exhibition is on display there. Sound // Markús Bjarnason / Studio Suð from Friday 14th August to Sunday 16th August.
The exhibition explores sound in its various manifestations; sound that emerges and sound that disappears. It brings together, among other things, sound-dampening paintings and different ideas about sound and silence. The exhibition opens at 6 p.m. on Friday and runs until 6 p.m. on Sunday.
The handball town and history of Hafnarfjörður
It's also ideal to use the weekend to check out Hafnarfjörður Museum of Local History. The exhibition can be seen, among other things, at the Packhouse at 6 Vesturgata. The handball town of Hafnarfjörður, where the history of handball in the town is traced from the sport's earliest years to the present day.
More of the Folk Museum's exhibitions can be found throughout the town, including in the Sívertsens House and Beggabúð, as well as outdoor displays. One of these is in Hellisgerði, which can be enjoyed during the Elven Festival.
