„It is a great honour and a sincere pleasure for me to stand here with you today to celebrate this momentous occasion, the 90th anniversary of Hörðuvellir Nursery School. This is a major milestone, not only for the nursery school itself but also for our community here in Hafnarfjörður,“ said Valdimar Víðisson, the mayor, as he celebrated the 90th anniversary of Hörðuvellir, the nursery school by the stream, with nursery managers and representatives from the education and public health department this morning.

Formally established in 1935

A photo album with old pictures. The eldest children sang and not only had an exhibition from the Folk Museum been set up on the railings at the nursery, but the children had also imagined their grandfathers and grandmothers as nursery children, drawn them and decorated the walls with them.

The school opened in 1935, but for two years prior to that, summer activities were held there. The school was originally founded by the town's working women.

Hörðuvellir a living part of the town

„The Hörðuvellir Nursery School has been a vibrant part of the local community for almost a century and has played a significant role in the upbringing and development of countless children over the years.“ He mentioned that for over 90 years, the nursery has been a place where children are allowed to be children, learn through play and thrive on their own terms.

„Every child has been nurtured here with respect, joy and care,“ he said, adding that what happens in a nursery school like Hörðuvellir has an impact long after school hours. „It shapes individuals, and it shapes society. Those of us who serve the town know that by investing in nursery education – in space, facilities, people and ideas – we are investing in the future,“ he said, expressing his gratitude for the work the staff have carried out and wishing them a prosperous future.
